CEE Interview and Written Switching Procedure Experience

SLD for the written switching procedure

Black colour is what I wrote
Red colour is the correction or further explanation.

How important is synchronizing?

Synchronizing requirements
There are four conditions that need to be met when synchronizing a generator or generators to the grid, which are:
  • Voltage - Voltage magnitude of the Bus and Line must be the same or within the allowable magnitude set in the synchronizing check relay. Typical settings are at 5% up to 10%.
  • Frequency - Frequency must be the same or within the allowable slip frequency between the Bus (Generator) and the Line (Grid).
  • Phase Sequence - Phase sequence must be the same sequence i.e. R, Y, B sequence for both Bus and Line.
  • Phase Angle - Phase angle for each Bus and Line must be 120 deg apart respectively. The phase angle between e.g. R - Y of Line and R-Y of Bus must be within the maximum allowable angle difference. Typical settings are from 5 deg up to 15 deg. The charge man or competent electrical engineer would normally close the breaker when the synchroscope is close to 000 hrs, which means that the angle difference is closing to 0 deg.

Electrical Notes (Own)

Peace be upon all of you,

Here are some of my own electrical notes. It's hand written like a logbook. Hope it can help you to prepare for the Board of Engineers Malaysia PCE Technical Paper (Electrical) or just for the sake of increasing your knowledge.

If you have any comments or questions about it, do comment below or send an email to cruxofee@gmail.com

Here's the download link:

Both files have the same content. I'd suggest for you to print on A3 paper as it will be legible. You can still zoom in and the writings are still legible. The high resolution is better and brighter.

PCE 2017 Day 2 Paper 1 (Electrical) Q7 SC Calculation

Q7. Calculation of fault current… What is the prospective short circuit current  at the end of a 100m, 70mm2, 4C cable connected to a secondary of a 1500 kVa Transformer, 11/0.4 kV, 5.65% Z. The cable reactance is 0.0751 ohm/km and the resistance is 0.3342 ohm/km. The Utility SC level is 50kA at the primary side of the transformer.

1. Answer 1 (Based on IEC 60909 definition for PSCC)

So what is prospective short circuit current? (IEC 60909)
1.3.3 Prospective (available) short-circuit current
Current that would flow if the short circuit were replaced by an ideal connection of negligible
impedance without any change of the supply

This is one KBAT question for Malaysian Professional Electrical Engineers.

The calculation below is to ultimately calculate the peak current or making current, most websites define the prospective short circuit current as the peak current. However, those definitions kind of differ from the IEC 60909 definition for PSCC.

PCE Related Acts and Regulations

Peace be upon all of you

Based on the syllabus for the Professional Competency Examination and Electrical Discipline, these are most of the acts and regulations mentioned, especially in preparation for the Common  Paper 1.

Info on allowance to bring in printed and binded books.

Here are the links to the docs from related government websites. I pray and wish all the best of luck to all the candidates sitting for PCE this coming 29th and 30th November 2017.

Economy Resistor in Vacuum Contactor Unit

1. What is economy resistor?
A resistor placed in series with the DC closing coil of the VCU or other type of DC coil to limit the current to the closing coil during running. Used with DC contractors category DC-14.

2. Operation example of a TAMCO 3.3kV VCU
- RL-2 and RL-3 closes when RL relay energized.
- CC energized via CC (NC) contact
- CC (NC) opens and CC is energized via RES resistor (economy resistor) to limit the current.
